A Mr + Mrs Company
There have been quite a few people who have asked us about how we can be and work together all the time, or what it’s like running our own business together. So we thought we would write a short post about the value it provides our clients, what we’ve done to set ourselves up for being fruitful in our marriage and in our work, and the enjoyment found working with our best friend.
One of the biggest advantages we have as a duo lies in our differences just as much as it does in our similarities. We both have inherently different perspectives as well as particular styles and aesthetics we’re drawn too. This is a huge asset, especially when processing brand strategies, designs, and build outs for our clients. Also, it helps us to continue to grow and push our designs to their fullest potential, and it’s just pain fun to see a concept that one of us created, and the other be like, “Dang! I would have never thought of it in that way. That’s awesome! They’re going to love that!”
Our clients definitely reap the benefits of us constantly pushing each other in our design and the experience we provide our clients.
02. Healthy Boundaries
Running and building your own business can be an all-consuming endeavor. Every moment carries the potential of turning into a business conversation about this or that regardless of where you are (even on vacation). When we first started Highlo, we had a home studio, which was a great place to start. It was super convenient, and it greatly reduced our overhead. Unfortunately though, it came with some downsides. As we grew, it became harder to separate studio life and home life. Our conversations and actions became extremely business focused, and on the flip side, business was encroached on by odds and ends needing to be done around the house. The lines were blurring, and we were feeling the effects of it.
We needed boundaries, and so we got a small studio in an awesome collaborative space of Main St. in Park City. It was one of the best things steps forward we have taken with Highlo. Our studio space is our creative sanctuary, if you will, where we get focus what our clients need and their projects, and a massive plus has been being out and about and meeting amazing people doing amazing things in town. Also with this, when we bike home at the end of the day, home is home. Business is ‘shut off’ for the day, and we can just enjoy each other’s company. Because of this step, our marriage/home life and studio life are thriving in really great and fun ways.
Working together is fun!! We really enjoy spending time with each other regardless of the where we are or what we’re doing, and the fact that we can work together day in and day out is the cherry on top. We love that we are living our dream of creating together and helping other business owners realize their dreams. Yes, it comes with challenges, but those are far outweighed by the joy of truly being partners in every facet of our lives.
Working with your spouse may not be for everyone and certainly is a learning process, but for us, we wouldn’t have it any other way.
